Godh Bharai Invitation Wording & Guide to the Indian Baby Shower

Godh Bharai, literally "filling the lap", is the traditional Indian baby shower that blesses the mother-to-be and her baby. It's known as Seemantham in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Valaikappu in Tamil Nadu, Dohale Jevan in Maharashtra and Shaad in Bengal.

When is Godh Bharai held?

Usually in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, on an auspicious date chosen by the family. It's typically a daytime ceremony followed by lunch.

What to include on the invitation

  • The name of the mother-to-be
  • Hosting families, often both her parents' and her in-laws' families
  • Date, time and venue
  • Lunch details, if served
  • Dress code, if any (many families choose green or pink for the mother-to-be)

Godh Bharai invitation wording

  1. "You are invited to the Godh Bharai ceremony to bless Sneha and her little one."
  2. "With joy in our hearts, we invite you to shower your love and blessings on Sneha at her Godh Bharai."
  3. "A little one is on the way! Please join us for a traditional baby shower ceremony."
  4. "Join the Malhotra & Sethi families to bless the mother-to-be. Ceremony at 11 AM, lunch to follow."
  5. "आपको सादर आमंत्रित किया जाता है… गोद भराई की रस्म में पधारकर माँ और शिशु को आशीर्वाद दें।"

Gift ideas guests often ask about

Bangles, a saree or comfortable outfit, dry fruits, and items for the baby are traditional. If you'd prefer blessings only, say so on the card: "Your presence is our present."

Etiquette notes

  • Avoid announcing the baby's gender: it isn't revealed in India, and the ceremony is about blessings for both.
  • Send invitations two weeks ahead, with a reminder two days before.

Design your card

Our Peacock & Lotus Godh Bharai design uses peacock feathers and a lotus pond in soft blush, a gentle nod to Krishna that families love. See more baby shower designs.
